How to Care for Your Jewelry
👋 When to Take It Off
Caring for your jewelry occasionally means taking it off, especially during the following activities:
🎾 Sports & Gym
Holding a tennis racket tightly or lifting weights can damage rings with stones. Heavy dumbbells making contact with your stone can cause chips or loosening.
🌱 Gardening
Heavy yard work can chip your stones or knock the settings loose. Always remove jewelry before digging, planting, or handling tools.
🧼 Cleaning House
Harsh chemical soaps or cleansers can soil your jewelry. For personalized photo rings, remove them while washing hands.
🔒 Safekeeping & Protection
- Safe Storage If you'll be taking your jewelry off, make sure you have a safe and memorable place to put it. Use a jewelry box or designated container.
- Keep It Free From Products Lotion, sunscreen, and perfume can gunk up your jewelry and even etch colored gemstones. Apply these products before putting on your jewelry.
- Regular Setting Checks Most jewelers recommend having your setting checked every six months to make sure nothing has become loose.
- Be Careful In The Kitchen Cookie dough, turkey loaf, piecrust… mixing with your fingers can leave a film on your jewelry and really affect its luster.
- No Swimming Pools or Spas Chlorinated water can react with the metals found in jewelry causing color changes and even structural damage. Remove jewelry before entering.
- Remove Before Bathing Soap can cause a film to form, making jewelry appear dull and dingy. By preventing this film you reduce the need for frequent servicing.
✨ Keep It Clean
Most jewelers will clean your jewelry free of charge, so take advantage of this courtesy. If you don't have time to get to the jewelry store, there are a few ways to clean your jewelry at home.
At-Home Cleaning Method
- Gentle Dish Detergent: Use a gentle dish detergent to clean lotion buildup from the bottom of the mounting. Scrub the top and bottom with a soft toothbrush and rinse several times in hot water.
- Ammonia Soak (Optional): For extra shine, soak your jewelry in a small bowl of ammonia diluted with three times the amount of water. Gently brush the top and bottom with a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Dip the jewelry into the solution again, then rinse in warm water several times to ensure all solution is removed.
- Dry Carefully: Set the jewelry on a soft towel to dry, or gently pat it dry.
